Solar Energy Gets a Big Boost

Dial One Wolfedale Electric recently completed a landmark renewable energy project: Working with valued partner RESCo, Dial One Wolfedale Electric’s solar crew connected 800 photovoltaic solar panels in a rooftop solar project in Mississauga. The completed project, now fully functioning, is one of the largest commercial rooftop solar arrays in Canada at present.

The state-of-the-art project included the installation of two 300 amp and one 600 amp distribution panels in addition to a 225 KVA transformer to ensure maximum power generation. Producing 162 kilowatts of power in peak times, the project includes solar thermal to service building hot water loads and a solar car port for low emission vehicles.

Rent Your Roof!

As many Dial One Wolfedale customers know, the Ontario Power Authority recently launched the Feed-In Tariff (FIT) program, which pays a standard rate for renewable energy ($0.635 cents per kWh for projects 251 to 500 kW, and $0.713 for projects 10 to 250 kW in size) generated by rooftop solar installations.

However, if the capital cost of a rooftop solar project is prohibitive ($1.5 to $3 million), your business can still benefit from the FIT program by renting your rooftop to a solar developer for the 20-year life of the FIT contract.

Solar Developers enter an agreement to lease rooftops as a first step for the FIT application.  The developer then engages a third party structural engineer to determine if the roof is suitable for a solar project.  Assuming the FIT is approved by the OPA, the developer will engage an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) firm to construct the project.  Dial One Wolfedale Electric is typically a subcontractor in this work to ensure that the PV system is installed correctly, prepare for the necessary inspections and obtain the required permits. (The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) actively enforces proper installation of these systems to ensure they meet the Ontario electrical code, so it is important to use a licensed electrical contractor).

One such solar developer is CarbonFree Technology, a Canadian company in business since 2006. It has completed 14 large-scale solar projects in the US (averaging 400kW) and is now focused on Ontario, where it is looking to rent large rooftops (40,000 sf and up). While we often hear of energy efficiency or renewable energy opportunities for businesses, these invariably represent a cost for our customers. Not so in this case: Solar developers are willing to pay up to $35,000 annually – for 20 years – depending on the size of the project and location!
